Gamification quotes
In this post, which I’m planning to update frequently with new quotes, I reported some of the quotes which from some of the main gamification practioners. They could be used to support the back my thesis.
“Games are the only force in the known universe that can get people to take actions against their self-interest, in a predictable way, without…

Flow
As I was suggested on Twitter I looked into something related to gamification the flow theory, and I found it simply fascinating.
According to its theorist, the psychologist Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi, flow its a state in which people “are completely absorbed in an activity, especially an activity which involves their creative abilities. During this ‘optimal experience’ they feel “strong, alert, in…

Research question
Chosen the theme of gamification I had to formalise my thesis research question a so I had to find a reason to actually use such a tool. This required very little thought, have been a few years now that I’m interested in designing for sustainability. Convinced by the First Things First Manifesto and the theories of sustainable design of Viktor…

Technology progression
The project of physical computing had to be done using exclusively one technology: Arduino. Being honest, before starting with it, I was a bit confused with this Italian board. It looked to me as a normal hardware board, our old computer were full of these kind of stuff, but still everybody was so excited about it. After a few months…

Project Methodology
For my project research and realisation, I used some of the IDEO cards methods.
The first part of the research was based the observation of people behaviours. Following the method Fly on the Wall, I’ve been silently observing the behaviours of some people in a domestic situation, in particular when they were leaving a room without switching off the lights.…

ReCog – A speculative design film
Here is finally the short speculative design minutes called ReCog, not an extremely creative name, but I find it good as it partially mention the idea without being too explicit.
The film represents a girl walking in the street crossing her path with different people. The facial recognition machine identifies person by person, communicating to the user information about them…

Presentations
Here are the five presentations which show the stages of research and development of the Speculative Design project I’ve been working on.
The first presentation focuses on the topic which I decided to explore: Surveillance and Facial Recognition Systems,
giving an overview of the theme and its relation to the project original topic: Autonomous Weapons and Meaningful Human Control.
The…

Errors
After a last review emerged that the part with Pim and Sofia crossing at 00:50 doesn’t really work. In the editing I indeed struggled to create this bit, as I’m missing a frame of Pim coming towards Sofia. Unfortunately, I realised only in the post-production phase that this was missing, too late to reshoot it.
However I tried to play…

Post production
Arrived to the post production phase.
First of all, I tried to stretch the movie, in order to arrive to 3 minutes which I thought it was the duration the film had to have. I included a lot of walking, too much walking, it made it pretty boring and not interesting, the focus was even shifting from the actual facial…
